Patora Dam and Yogeshwar Temple is a beautiful place of Nuapada District of Odisha. It is located approximately 18 km from Nuapada Headquarter situated near Patora village. It is famous for its alluring natural beauty, sunrise and sunset. The dam was built in 1996. The Pathora dam is lay across the Jonk river which is a tributary of Odisha’s longest river Mahanadi.There are 8 gates available. The dam is mainly using for irrigation, farming and water conservation. It is surrounding with nature. There is a beautiful park on the left side of the dam on the hill. Mainly, People come here in winter to enjoy the nature from the holl side or sitting on the velvet type grass in the park.
It is a famous picnic spot of Nuapada District. Every year huge numbers of people come here from its neighbour district Bolangir, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Kalahandi etc of Odisha and also from Chhattisgarh state.
Yogeshwar Temple and its history:
Near the Patora dam, there is a beautiful Shiv temple which attracts huge numbers of devotees every year. Temple featuring ancient deity, intricately carved stone sculptures, and breathtaking panoramic views. There are three(3) large shiva linga on the upper part of the temple which looks attractive. A huge Hanuman idol built in the entrance of the temple.
According to a Bramhin(Pujaka) of the temple when the Dam was under construction in 1996 Yogeshwar Bhagwan came in the dream of a Engineer and said there was a statue of God Shiva. Then they found a huge approximately 7 feet 6 inches statue (Shiva Linga) of Yogeswar bhagwan. After that they tried to ship to Bhubaneswar but they couldn’t. Then near the dam a beautiful temple was built for the almighty. The famous singer Gulsan Kumar also came there and gave a statue of almighty shiv Parvati and Ganesh. Mahashivratri is the famous fastival observed here.
